Sanaa denies news of disputes with Saudi Arabia
Yemen-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 1/26/2001
The Yemeni minister of the Interior Hussein Arab has announced that the Saudi- Yemeni committee will hold a meeting on February 15 in Riyadh to discuss the bilateral border agreement, denying at the same time, any disputes over the border demarcation between the two countries.
In a statement issued by the Yemeni daily " September 26" Arab added that the joint committee to implement the border agreement which held its third session by the end of last week in Sanaa in the presence of the Saudi minister of the Interior Nayef Bin Abdul Aziz has attained " positive results."
It was presumed that Sanaa's meeting will result in taking practical measures towards installing the border markers which was assigned to the German company " Hansa Luftbield."
However, the two sides announced that they had agreed to assign " the joint technical committee to complete necessary studies to implement the project of border demarcation according to the agreement signed on June,12, 2000 in Jeddah."
Arab explained that the information rumored by the papers on differences with Saudi Arabia " are groundless," noting that the two countries have agreed the technical aspect for building border centers.
The paper had earlier indicated differences over the four borders positions sites that the two countries supposed to install.
On the other hand, the Yemeni weekly " Yemen Times" said in recent issue that Saudi forces still occupy centers situated in the Yemeni territories. A matter which raised the protest of certain tribes stationed near the borders.
The agreements on demarcating the joint borders of 1350 KM which was signed in June 2000 had ended a long conflict between the two countries continued since the beginning of the 1930 s.
Since the signing of the agreement Yemeni- Saudi relations improved greatly following the " coolness " in their relations because of the Yemeni stand which was considered closer to Iraq during the second Gulf war in 1991.
