Palestine-Israel, Politics, 1/26/2001

Taba negotiations were resumed on Thursday between the Palestinian and the Israeli sides amid Israeli assertions that the negotiators will not be able to reach an agreement before the elections of the Israeli government in February.

Meantime, the Israeli forces continued their campaign against the unarmed Palestinian forces, resulted in killing two Palestinians. Tightened measures were made against the Palestinian cities and villages especially against Toulkarem where two Israeli soldiers were killed recently.

News reports from the Palestinian territories said that the Israeli forces mopped up several areas in Gaza and military barriers were installed near Ghadid and Nafeh Dekileim settlements. The Israeli forces killed the Palestinian youth Khalil al-Sandi on Thursday morning who died later in the day at the hospital.

Eye-witnesses said that two Palestinians were hit by the Israeli bullets on Wednesday during the confrontations with the Israeli forces near Rafah Yam settlement to the south of Gaza.

Meantime, the Palestinian youth who was wounded by the Israeli bullets on Wednesday died on Thursday morning as the Israeli forces prevented the ambulance from having access him to admit him to the hospital.

A Palestinian source said that teenager Safwat Issam Qashta ( 16 year old) died after the Israeli forces prevented the ambulances to reach him.

On the other hand, the Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak agreed to meet with the chairman of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat in Davos, Switzerland on the sideline of the meetings of the World economic Forum due to be held there next week. For his part, the Israeli minister of regional cooperation Shimon Peres said he will take part in Davos's meeting and will confer with Arafat on Sunday.

The Israeli daily Maareve said that Barak will invest Arafat's meeting and the Davos summit to urge the American administration and the European countries to making pressure on the Palestinians with the aim of halting the Intifada and reaching an agreement with Israel.
