First Lady Mubarak highlights efforts to secure women's rights
Egypt, Culture, 1/24/2001

Egypt's First Lady Suzanne Mubarak affirmed the commitment of various groups to securing the rights of Egyptian girls and women within a comprehensive national plan.

Addressing the opening session of a one-day conference in Aswan entitled "Development and needs of young upper Egyptian women", Mrs. Mubarak stressed the role of women in Egypt's development plans.

Mrs. Mubarak, who heads the technical advisory committee of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, said that the conference came almost a year after the government announced the second 'decade of the Egyptian child.

She referred to the unified child law issued in 1996 as one of the achievements of the council. Mrs. Mubarak also highlighted the importance of including child care in the government's 1997-2002 plan.

"Girls and young women were given a priority in the second decade declaration in a bid to secure their rights to education, healthcare and culture", Mrs. Mubarak said.

She added that despite the persistent efforts, a large gap still remains between the number of boys and girls enrolled in schools, especially in rural areas.

Mrs. Mubarak said that extending health insurance to cover 90 per cent of Egyptian children-especially those with special needs- was one of the primary aims of the second decade. The plan also calls for vaccinating 95 per cent of children.

She added that 900 women's medical care centers and 430 mobile ones have been established to provide due health care for mothers nationwide.
