Taba negotiations discuss modified version of Clinton's proposals

"The peace proposals of former US President Bill Clinton are being examined during the negotiations taking place at present between the Palestinians and Israelis after introducing some amendments to them," said Osama Al Baz, Political Advisor of President Hosni Mubarak.
In statements to reporters on Tuesday, Baz said Egypt is not taking part in the Taba meetings, adding that the country had no interest in pressurizing the Palestinians during these negotiations or any other negotiations.
On the reason behind Israeli Premier Ehud Barak's agreement to enter into the current negotiations, Baz believed it is part of the "electoral game".
"Barak is bargaining, while his eyes are on the upcoming Israeli elections," he noted.
Baz said the negotiations do not aim at increasing Barak's chances in the elections.
This cannot be known for certain, because the matter hinges on the possibility of making headway during the remaining short period before the elections due to be held on February 6.
"The Yardstick in this regard is achieving progress in negotiations," he said, adding that the two sides were negotiating against time.
On whether the current negotiations in Taba have yet achieved any progress, he said it is too early to judge.
However, he hoped that some progress would be made during the current round of talks held between Palestinians and Israelis in Taba, Egypt.
Dr. Baz warned that stability and security in the area would be endangered if headway were not made.
"There is a glimpse of hope that progress can be made," he said.
He expressed hope that the two parties would agree on certain topic.
"In order to understand the Israeli policies, we have to understand the interior structure of Israel," he said.
