On al-Assad's visit to the UAE
United Arab Emirates-Syria, Politics, 1/23/2001
The Kuwaiti daily al-Anba' quoted a wellinformed source in Damascus as saying that the visit of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to the United Arab Emirates UAE is of a special importance because it comes following the summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council GCC which unveiled the disputes between the UAE and Iran.
The source expected that this visit will open the field to discuss this matter away from tension especially as Syria owns remarkable relations with the two sides and has worked during the previous stages in a mediation that ensures a just solution.
The source added that Syria has a remarkable position that enables it to discuss this sensitive issue with the UAE side and wants to benefit from the current Iranian inclination in backing the Arab rights towards the Arab rights in the conflict with Israel.
The source expected President al-Assad to carry with him proposals concerning the UAE islands that serve the process of the return back of the UAE on them and ensure solving the disputes rapidly.
The source added that the meeting between President al-Assad and Sheikh Zayed was an occasion to discuss relations between the two sides in line with the agreements signed on the political and economic sides.
