Fundamental changes to take place in Syria
Syria, Politics, 1/22/2001

Well-informed sources in Syria told the Kuwaiti "al-Rai al-Am" daily that the country will witness during the coming phase fundamental changes at the level of the government's administration that will target directors of more 50 public companies and establishments.

The sources told al- Rai al-Am that this step which is expected to be completed within 20 days falls in the course of evaluating the past phase, within the course of the plan to modernize the state. A process started in the country since President Bashar al-Assad assumed power six months ago.

The sources expressed optimism when confirmed that the change will cover one third of the state's public establishments in all ministries including the ministry of information.

The sources added that the situation has reached a deterioration to the extent that it can be said that Syria had not witnessed such a critical phase, besides that these sides were given enough chance and it was proven they have to be changed after their files were fully studied.

The sources stressed that the corruption which hit several areas in the Syrian life is a result of personal practices to which the party has no connection and that there should be a separation between the Baath party and those who claimed they are Baathists and exploited their positions to achieve personal interests.

The source added that most of those opposed these improper conduct and practices were from inside the Baathist organization itself. A matter which stresses that " Baathists comrades " who entered the prison since the Baath party assumed power on March 8, 1963 was an evidence that this party "which has a deal of the history of the region has been always able to purify itself from misdeeds."
