Morocco, Economics, 1/19/2001
Environment pollution and degradation costs Morocco 8% of its Gross Domestic Product, said Mohamed El Yazghi, minister of territory development, town planning, housing and environment.
The minister who was speaking at a national seminar of the National Clean Production Center said the Moroccan environment protection and sustainable development strategy seeks to limit nature degradation by safeguarding water resources, reducing waste, improving air quality and preserving nature. The strategy is supported by an integrated action plan involving the government, local councils, the private sector and non-governmental organizations.
He added that a special program to reduce industry-caused pollution was set forth and a special anti-industrial pollution fund is contributing 80 million DH (around $ 7.6 mln) to the financing of 15 projects, in addition to 10 million DH ($ 9.5 Mln) for small and medium-sized enterprises.
The minister also announced a training session on the management and reduction of industrial waste will be held for industrial plants.
The seminar is debating how industrial units can produce environment-friendly waste as an additional factor to increase their competitiveness.
