US proposals, peace process discussed
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 1/18/2001

In statements following the meeting Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said the main principles in the US proposals that have been rejected by the Palestinians and ways to move forward under certain rules and conditions have been addressed.

"The Palestinian stance maintains that certain clarifications have to be given in order to accept the major points in the US proposals," said Moussa, remarking that the Egyptian stance in this regard is identical with the Palestinians.

"The peace process has to be framed into a sound shape that would appeal' to the Palestinians," said Moussa.

Referring to a flow formula in the process, the top diplomat said that we do not want to throw the peace process out of the window.

He said Egypt does not negotiate on behalf of the Palestinians.

"Egypt will convey to Palestinian LeaderYasser Arafat, the views of Ben Ami and will also hear from Arafat the outcome of the latest Palestinian-Israeli contacts," added Moussa.

"Israel's insistence on the current stance will lead to no where and the Arab and Palestinian sides believe that the ideas, marketed now, are not enough," said Moussa.

Amr Moussa demanded immediate halting of the Israeli assaults in the Palestinian territories.
