Sudanese efforts to make reconciliation
Sudan, Politics, 1/16/2001

The council of coordinating the southern provinces in Sudan banned groups signatories to the Khartoum peace agreement to have its members carrying weapons inside cities.

The acting chairman of the Southern coordination council Angelo Beda said in a statement to the Sudanese daily al-Rai al-Am issued on Monday that the directives came after a meeting with specialized security department with the aim to minimize the process of piling weapons by the southern defense forces which signed the Khartoum peace agreement.

He added that the southern council gave its instructions to the groups leaderships to the need of giving up their arms in their own respective areas before leaving for the cities.

He explained that the plan to evacuate Southern citizens to their areas will be made in 1002 and that the process of returning back will be voluntarily after preparing conditions in Southern Sudan.

He stressed the relentless efforts made by the government to improve living conditions of citizens in the southern provinces but he admitted that there are numerous obstacles hindering the transport of foods to the south.

He expressed fear that a famine will take place in the south of Sudan in the period between May and June, noting that southern Sudan suffers diseases and it is lacking water because of the war.
