Lebanese president confers with Khaddam

Lebanese President Emil Lahoud on Friday evening met with Syrian vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam.

Present at the meeting were the commander of the Syrian forces working in Lebanon Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Safi and chairman of the security section at the Syrian forces working in Lebanon Lt. Gen. Ghazi Kanaan A Lebanese official statement said that at the beginning of the meeting Khaddam conveyed to President lahoud greetings of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his wishes.

The statement said that discussions dealt with current regional conditions in light of recent developments and that view points were identical towards the need of confronting developments in a united Arab position towards the Israeli proposals which target incomplete solutions and maneuvers. After meeting with President lahoud, vice President Khaddam and members of the accompanying delegation visited the headquarters of the Shiite higher Islamic council where they offered condolences on the demise of the late chairman of the Shiite council Sheikh Muhammad Mahdi Shams eddine to the speaker of the Lebanese parliament Nabih Berri and to the deputy chairman of the Shiite higher council Sheikh Abdul Ameer Qabalan.

Later in the evening Khaddam met with the Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri and discussions dealt with regional developments.

To this end, the Lebanese President learnt from al-Hariri about the results of his meeting on Thursday in Damascus with President Bashar al-Assad.

During the meetings, the two sides reviewed current conditions in the region in light of recent regional moves and Lebanon's position towards them especially proposals surfaced in the meetings held between the Palestinian and Israeli sides.
