US proposals still on table
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 1/11/2001
The American proposals are still on the table, Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said, adding that what was important now was to work on the Palestinian - Israeli track to reach a fair, peace accord.
In statements he gave in Tunisia, Moussa said all sides could say how they understand the proposal and ask any related questions like the Palestinians did.
"We support the US peace intuitive, but after effecting the amendments, required by the Palestinians," he said.
The statements of the peace process has led to the Palestinian Intifada, which bears witness to the frustration and anger of the Palestinian and Arabs in general.
Moussa, who arrived in Tunisia on Wednesday, began to make contacts with the sides participating in the committee in charge of the following up implemented of the resolutions adopted by the October Arab Summit in his capacity as the Chairman of the Committee's emergency session held in Cairo on Thursday.
Moussa received Palestinian Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nabil Shaath who briefed him on the latest developments in the occupied territories.
He also met with Tunisian Minister for Foreign Affairs Habib Bin Yahia, and head of the Palestine Liberation Organization Political Department Farouq Qaddomi. The three officials discussed the issues listed on the Committee's agenda.
President Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali is scheduled to hold talks on Thursday with the Committee's members and Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Maguid.
The Committee will hold two sessions to follow up the measures adopted by Arab leaders during the emergency Arab Summit held in Cairo on October 21-22 to support Al-Aqsa Intifada and the Palestinians' steadfastness.
In his speech, Tunisian Foreign Minister Al-Habib Ben Yahia welcomed participant delegations and voiced appreciation of the role played by Moussa who chairs the Committee.
Ben Yahia also praised efforts being exerted by Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdel Maguid for promoting pan-Arab action.
He added that the situation on the Arab arena and challenges posed by the constant Israeli hostilities require more efforts for pressing the Israeli government to implement international legitimacy resolutions and honour human rights in Palestinian territories.
"The deteriorating- Palestinian security and economic conditions require the activation of methods for providing the Palestinians with urgent aid," said Ben Yahia.
