Egypt and Saudi Arabia full backing to Palestinian people
Saudi Arabia-Egypt, Politics, 1/11/2001

Egypt and Saudi Arabia voiced full commitment to back the Palestinian people politically and materially under the resolutions issued by the Emergency Arab Summit in Cairo.

The Egyptian-Saudi Higher Committee, at the close of their meetings in Riyadh yesterday, said the two countries are seeking to achieve a peaceful settlement for restoring the Palestinian people's legitimate rights.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia affirmed that Jerusalem is an Arab and Islamic cause, is non-negotiable and part of the occupied land on which the UN Security Council resolutions apply.

All the measures the Israeli occupation forces adopted to annex and Judaize Arab and Islamic Jerusalem are null and void legally and politically, said a statement issued Riyadh Wednesday at the end of joint committee meetings that ended late Tuesday.

The meetings were chaired by the two countries' Foreign Ministers Amr Moussa and Prince Saud al-Faisal.

Cairo and Riyadh expressed hope that the latest flurry of contacts would lead to a peaceful settlement that would restore the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

They voiced total confidence in the Palestinian negotiator and urged the international community to apply more pressure on Israel.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia denounced the brutal Israeli practices and suppressive measures against Palestinians and the policy of enforcing sieges and closures and isolation of Palestinian areas.

They called for providing protection to the Palestinian people from these measures and practices.

The two countries further affirmed their firm commitment on the necessity for the establishment of full and just peace in the region on the basis of UN Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338 and the principle of land-for-peace.

On the Arab front, they stressed the importance of pursuing Arab action and solidarity according to the Charter of the Arab League.

During their two-day meetings, Egypt and Saudi Arabia examined cooperation in the political, economic, cultural and consular fields.

They agreed to convene a technical committee meeting of experts in Cairo on February 17 to look into obstacles in the face of larger trade exchange.

They affirmed the importance of setting up two offices in both capitals to help businessmen.

The Egyptian-Saudi Committee affirmed the need for greater media cooperation between the two countries, and agreed within this context to enhance cooperation between the Middle East News Agency and the Saudi Press Agency.

ln a press release issued Wednesday , participants said they agreed to promote cooperation in the various media domains such as radio, the protection of intellectual property rights, encourage the exchange of visits and facilitate the work of journalists and media officers in the two countries.

The two sides also welcomed the signing of a cooperation agreement in the sphere of youth and sports between the two countries.
