Regional-Palestine, Politics, 1/11/2001

Works of the 3rd session of the Arab follow up committee in support of the Palestinian uprising was opened on Wednesday evening at the conferences palace in Tunisia with the participation of the foreign minister Farouk al-Shara' The committee is composed of the foreign ministers of Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia and the secretary General of the Arab league Ismat Abdul Miguid.

Each of Saudi Arabia and Morocco are represented by their deputy foreign ministers to the session The palestinian side is represented by the Chairman of the PLO political department Farouk al-Qaddoumi and the palestinian official in charge of planning and international co-operation at the Palestinian Authority Nabil Shaath Al-Shara' arrived in Tunisia earlier in the day leading an official delegation to attend the meeting of the follow up committee emerged from the recent Arab Cairo Summit.

In an arrival statement to pressmen al-Shara' said that this meeting is being held in the framework of backing the Palestinian Intifada, implementing Arab summits resolutions and finding out means to follow up the implementation what was agreed upon among the Arab states.

Replying a question on the recent proposals of the US President, the Syrian president expressed pessimism over achieving fundamental progress in this limited time ( time so far left in the US President Clinton's term of office), noting that the peace opportunity which has not been serious in 7 years will not be able to give results within 7 days.

He stressed that the determination of the Arabs and the Palestinians and the continued work of the Palestinian Intifada to restore back the Palestinian right would keep the Arabs united to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on international legitimacy resolutions and the land for peace formula.

On the Syrian- Tunisian relations, al-Shara said: " these relations are solid and strong," noting that the convening of the Syrian- Tunisian higher joint committee in Tunisia very shortly revive great expectations to develop these relations in all walks of life.
