Morocco, China convene joint commission

Morocco and China will hold the fifth session of their joint economic commission on Jan. 20-21 in Beijing, the Chinese embassy in Rabat announced on Tuesday.

The meeting will assess the evolution of commercial exchanges and economic cooperation since the commission latest session, held in 1995 in Rabat.

Means to upgrade and diversify this cooperation will also be debated during the Beijing meeting.

Prior to the commission's session, Moroccan and Chinese experts will finalize a series of draft agreements in the realms of tourism, infrastructure and environment.

The meeting will be an opportunity for Rabat and Beijing to study the promotion of bilateral cooperation, especially in the fields of trade, finance, agriculture, equipment, transportation, energy and mining, fish culture, youth and sports.

The creation of a business council to promote partnership between the two countries' businessmen is also on the agenda.

According to the Chinese embassy, the Moroccan and Chinese officials will lay a special emphasis on inter-regional cooperation and on Moroccan-Chinese-African triangular cooperation in accordance with the action plan adopted by the China-Africa forum, held last October in Beijing.

According to official figures, trade between the two countries totaled $ 252 million in 1998 against $ 100 million in the 1980's.

Six Chinese enterprises have been operating in Morocco's fisheries sector over the past 10 years. The two countries also cooperate in social fields, as 120 Chinese physicians are currently working in 12 hospitals in Morocco.
