Junblat opens a dialogue with Syria
Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 1/10/2001
The chairman of the Lebanese socialist Progressive party Walid Jinblat has stressed that the telephone call he had received from the chairman of the security department in the Syrian forces working in Lebanon Lt. Gen. Ghazi Kanaan was not a reconciliation call, rather re-opening the dialogue " because we are not originally in disputes."
In a statement to the Lebanese daily al-Mustaqbal issued on Tuesday, Jinblat added we are making constructive dialogue and on line of that Lt. Gen. Ghazi Kanaan " telephoned me, and I delegated to him minister Ghazi al-Aridi in the second day," stressing that this is an entrance to an objective and positive dialogue on all matters.
Junblat added " what was said to us before and on Monday show care to maintain brotherly relations and put an end to bargaining and deviation, which are stances proclaimed by those who claim to have care on the relations with Syria and its interests in Lebanon.
The paper quoted Junblat as saying " the ground of the relations between Junblat and Damascus is political and it is natural that Junblat will discuss with the Syrian leadership political matters." Noting that the source of the previous crisis (between Junblat and Syria) is the differences in political assessment.
The sources added that the prime minister Rafik al-Hariri is the one who basically tries to restore the relations between Damascus and Junblat.
