Baz warns against Israel waging a regional war
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 1/9/2001
Egypt's President Mubarak's political advisor, Osama el-Baz warned against Israeli resigned PM's threats with waging a regional war. "Such a war will not be at all in favor of Israel even if it used nuclear weapons, which will be a bad omen for it, since the Arabs have weapons that will deter them. This is in addition to the support by Islamic, African and some third world countries." Affirmed Baz.
In a meeting on managing economic conflict with Israel Baz said that Israel's call for establishing a Middle East Market was aiming at leaking in Arab economies. "When it failed, Israel turned to bilateral economic agreements with some Arab states and opening trade offices therein, not to mention import and export. This is besides other veiled ways especially in the investment field," he added.
Baz confirmed that the goal of the recent Arab summit has been backing Palestinian negotiators and that the Intifada has proved that steadfastness, not arms, is that really counts.
"One of Arab means of confrontation is economic boycott that exceeded goods, commodities and services to companies and countries that have relations with Israel," noted Baz. He added that Israeli exports to Arab countries amounted only to US$ 68 and US$ 91 in 1999 and 2000 respectively.
Baz emphasized that the boycott is an Arab message to Israel that it must abide by international legitimacy. He also called for upgrading technology in all Arab countries to compete with Israel economically. Baz called for building Arab economic bloc with a view to standing international competition and stressed the importance of establishing the common Arab market.
"We do not accept that the United States is guarding Israel's security while it is paying no heed to Arab security. Conflict with Israel is not at all an ethnic one," concluded Baz.
