Morocco and Iran move to re-launch trade
Morocco-Iran, Economics, 1/9/2001
The Moroccan federation of chambers of commerce, industry and services and its Iranian peer will set up a joint structure to re-launch trade between the two countries.
The Moroccan federation chairman agreed with Iran's ambassador to Morocco, Reza Bakhtiari, to set the joint structure in the perspective of prime minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi's visit to Iran this month. A Moroccan business delegation will be accompanying the prime minister.
Trade volume between Morocco and Iran reached in 1998 $ 114 million (1.2 billion DH). Morocco suffers a $ 63.3 million deficit.
For the federation, access to the 60 million-strong Iranian market is rendered difficult by administrative and economic constraints, including the requirement to adjust purchases to the state currency revenues, high customs duties (from 5 to 375%) and slow administrative procedures.
