Syria-Turkey, Politics, 1/9/2001
The Turkish daily Hurriet said on Monday that Turkish- Syrian relations have entered a new crisis and that President Bashar al-Assad's visit to Turkey was suspended. A visit which is expected to improve bilateral relations between the two countries.
Under the title " al-Assad will not arrive in Turkey and that Hattai (Al-Iskandaroun Sanjak) crisis has postponed the visit, the Turkish daily added that the optimism to open a white page with Syria after the Kurdish workers party crisis has been eliminated because of Hattai problem..
The Turkish paper explained that Ankara proposed to Damascus to add another article to the joint declaration principles stating " direct or indirect Syrian giving up to Hattai" but, and at the directives of the new Syrian President Syria has refused this proposal and for that Turkey has suspended the visit.
The paper added " and until the question of Hattai will be dealt with, the visit of President al-Assad, if it will take place, will be symbolic and without convening official talks."
