Suez Canal suspending bridge during Sinai festivals next April
Egypt, Economics, 1/8/2001

In less than 90 days Egypt and Japan will celebrate completing the middle part of the Suez Canal suspending bridge during Sinai festivals next April. The bridge, that extends over the S.C. to join the main land with Sinai, will be inaugurated officially next October.

It will join Asia and Africa in the most strategic point there. The bridge will be operating for vehicles traffic round the clock daily in cooperation with Japan.

Setting up that bridge is part of the national project to develop Sinai peninsula where 3 million people are going to live there. About 500 thousand hectares are planned to be reclaimed and cultivated to increase exporting products. The mentioned bridge will help solve the transportation problem across the S.C.

Vehicles had to wait for more than three hours to get to the other side of the canal.

The bridge cost LE 670 million, 60% of which was granted by the Japanese government. The total length of the bridge is 9.5 km. It is divided into three parts: the western part extending for 3055 m, the eastern part extending for 4095 m, plus the main middle suspending part that extends for 1850 m, rising 49.5 m high over the S.C. The most modern international specifications have been applied in implementing the project.
