Siwa, Oasis of one million palm trees
Egypt, Economics, 1/4/2001

Egypt's Prime Minister, Atef Ebeid, is now studying strategy of developing the Oasis of Siwa, so as to be a fresh internationally investment attracting area and a new source for increasing national income.

This oasis has many advantages in various fields such as tourism, especially that of therapy where people come to get treatment of rheumatic illnesses , plus visiting historical sites of medieval and Islamic eras. Projects of cultivation, minerals, petroleum and chemical industries.. etc. can well be carried out there.

The report on Siwa includes data about the volume of services there, electric energy, education, health, roads, communications, water and hotel potentials. The present Siwa airport is going to be developed so as to receive charter and light planes besides the cargo aircraft. In the upcoming stage it will be turned into an international airport through the BOT system.

Siwa is greatly admired by tourists particularly German and Japanese. They like to visit the temples of Alexander the Great, Amoun (the pharaonic god), Cleopatra as well as many other Greek, Christian and Islamic antiquities.

The land of Siwa (about 225 thousand feddans) is still virgin and fertile, and there are huge underground water stores. There are already about one million date palm. Olive is cultivated there on vast areas, expected to have about four million olive trees in only three years, with olive-oil industry that can produce 500 thousand tons so that Egypt would be the second after Spain in that industry.
