Arab Follow-Up Committee to meet in Cairo today to discuss US proposals
Regional, Politics, 1/4/2001

Meeting of the Committee assigned with following up the Arab Summit Resolutions under Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa.

The meeting will be attended by Essmat Abdul Maguid, Secretary-General of the Arab League along with the Foreign Ministers of Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Morocco and Tunisia.

The Committee will discuss a detailed report by Abdul Maguid on the activities of the former committee.

The Palestinian delegation will submit a report on the confrontations between the Palestinians and the Israeli army and the developments at the Palestinian front.

Diplomatic sources said the meeting will discuss the Arab attitude towards the US peace proposals and the outcome of President Mubarak's peace contacts.

In addition, the Committee will discuss the results of contacts between Arafat and President Clinton, and the measures taken by the Islamic Development Bank for providing assistance to the Palestinian people.

Secretary-General of the Arab League Dr. Essmat Abdul Maguid has stressed the importance of the meeting of the Arab Follow-Up Committee.

He told "Al-Akhbar daily" that the meeting would focus on the current developments in the occupied Palestinian lands.

He said the Palestinians demand for convening Cairo meeting does not clash with the date previously set for convening the Higher Follow-Up Committee in Tunisia on January 11-12.

He said Tunis meetings would be devoted for discussing steps for carrying out the decisions on supporting the Intifada and Al-Aqsa Funds and the relevant measures taken by the Islamic Development Bank.

He said the meeting would discuss Arab and international moves for uncovering inhuman Israeli practices against the Palestinian people.
