Syria scores a growth at 2% in 2000
Syria, Economics, 1/4/2001
In its Wednesday's issue, the Syrian state run daily Tishreen said that the GNP in Syria has increased between 1.7 to 2 % at the current prices during the year 2000.
The paper said that the highest estimate for the inflation rate remained around 4%" for the year 2000. A matter which led to a recession in the GNP at fixed prices.
The paper continued that " objective reasons have contributed to this rate and among these are the bad weather conditions in Syria during the last three years.
It said that the trade balance for the year 2000 will record a surplus, thanks the good level of oil price, which constitutes three fourth of the Syrian sales to the foreign markets.
The paper expects a growth at a rate of 3.5 % at fixed prices for the current year 2001, thanks to the measures taken during the recent months to encourage investments and the increase in the non- oil exports. The paper noted that the decision taken to establish private banks in Syria will eliminate most of problems hindering investments in the country. Tomader.
