Lebanon-Israel, Politics, 1/4/2001

Lebanese president Emil Lahoud and the Speaker of the Lebanese parliament Nabih Berri on Wednesday discussed security developments on the borders in light of the escalated Israeli aggressions against the liberated Lebanese territories.

During the meeting the two sides also discussed current moves at the regional level in light of developments in the region, especially the meeting of the follow up committee and Lebanon's position towards issues listed on the Cairo's meeting agenda.

They also reviewed regional and international reactions emerged after Lebanon's announcement its commitment to the right of the Palestinian refugees to return to their occupied lands in Palestine and rejection of settling them in Lebanon and not to agree any formula that will be a result of a barter deal between the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli government, that are considered by Lebanon as a completion to the talks held between the two sides ( the Palestinian and the Israelis) in Oslo which Lebanon considers as not achieving a just and comprehensive peace it advocates.

On the other hand, the Lebanese prime minister Rafik al-Hariri discussed with the US ambassador to Lebanon David Satter- field conditions and developments in south Lebanon and developments in the region.

Following the meeting, Satter- Field stressed Washington's commitment to continue work in order to reach a comprehensive solution in the region including a solution for the Palestinian refugees taking into account Lebanon's special interests.

A landmine went off in a bulldozer in Sujoud area in South Lebanon while it was removing remains of a house demolished by the israeli forces during occupation. The Bulldozer was greatly damaged and the driver escaped.
