Israel signs the treaty to establish the international criminal court
Israel, Politics, 1/4/2001
Israel on Sunday evening signed the treaty provides for the establishment of the International criminal court which it used to oppose.
This approval was expressed in a statement by the Israeli Cabinet which said that Israel has changed its position after it has got legal explanations that permits it to make sure that signing this treaty will not violate its interests.
The statement noted that the treaty does not permit to bring the Israelis before the court because they have built settlements in the Palestinian territories and that the signing decision was taken after making contacts at a higher level with the US to make sure that the Israeli interests are protected.
The International criminal court which was established on the ground of trying Nazi war criminals by the end of the Second World war will try individuals who are accused of committing ugliest barbarous acts including mass killing, war crimes and other violations of human rights.
Earlier in the day on Sunday Israel refused to sign the treaty of fears that this treaty considers the Israeli settlement in the occupied Arab lands as a war crime.
