Political leader against exploiting Berber issue for political ends
Morocco, Politics, 1/3/2001

Mohand Laensar, leader of the Berber-Oriented Popular Movement party, said he was against the "political exploitation" of the Amazigh (Berber) issue.

Laensar, who was interviewed by Al-Haraka daily, called the Amazigh issue a "national affair and a claim of all Moroccans without exception."

The MP leader said his party did not manage the issue in a political way, noting that the project to integrate the Amazigh dialect in education programs and in media was not reactivated.

Laensar said his party will debate the Amazigh issue during its upcoming congress, calling all political actors and civil society activists to be involved in the debate that he does not want to be strictly reserved to the MP.

The Amazigh issue should not be a bone of contention between Moroccan political parties, he said adding there is a certain convergence between all Morocco's political forces regarding the issue.
