Arab states are called on to maintain economic blocs

The secretary general of the Arab economic unity council Ahmad Jweili has warned against marginalizing the Arab economy during the coming phase amid the international blocs and the GATT agreement. He called for the need to be ready to withstand these blocs.

In a statement to the Kuwaiti daily al-Anbaa issued on Tuesday, Jweili explained that the agreement to facilitate trade exchange which was issued in 1981 and approved by the urgent Arab summit is but an extension for the idea of the common Arab market.

He remarked reasons that were behind the deterioration of the Arab economy, noting that these are internal challenges linked to the process of population increase and its requirements and other challenges linked to not taken into account the principle of human development and developing the human factor, especially in the area of technology. He called for setting up Arab economic blocs.

The secretary general of the Arab economic unity council noted that there are certain Arab states which had held partnership agreements with the EEC and that other Arab countries including Syria will join the these partnership agreements in the few coming years.

As for the coming tasks of the Arab economic unity council, Jweili explained that the council has in the coming phase to find out the mechanism for joint special investment development on trade grounds with the mission of promoting projects and having interest in human development programs, Information technology, setting up an effective system for economic and trade information in the service of Arab governments and drawing an obligatory system to carry out obligations of the member states in the agreements relating to trade and the economy.
