UN official praises Egypt for protecting asylum seekers
Egypt, Politics, 12/23/2000
Mohammad Boukari, Regional Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) praised protection and care provided by Egypt for asylum seekers of different nationalities, mainly Sudanese.
Boukari said the Commission appreciates the instructions of President Hosni Mubarak to provide full care for the refugees and that the Sudanese refugees would be treated the same as their Egyptian brothers in education.
In a press conference on the issuance of the annual report on the status of refugees worldwide in 2000, he pointed out that Egypt hosts more than 7,000 refugees, who belong to 24 Arab, African and Asian nationalities. Sudanese and Somalis constitute the biggest chunk.
The UN official, in the press conference, attended by movie star Adel Imam, UNHCR goodwill ambassador, said the number of refugees all over the world at present is 22 million, in addition to 17 million displaced people.
Answering a query by the Middle East News Agency (MENA) on refugees' lack of security and protection as they are subject to armed militias attacks, Boukari said this protection is still incomplete due to the diverse ethnic cities to which those refugees and displaced people belong.
"The UNHCR has been trying to overcome this problem through new mechanisms to protect the weakest people, women and children in order to maintain refugees' human and non-political feature," he said.
The international official called on donor countries to give financial contributions to help it assume its role in help in those who flee their homes because of armed disputes, persecutions and human rights violations.
