human rights group assesses 10 year activity and probes prospects

The Moroccan human rights consultative council (CCDH) convened in Rabat Friday its 15th session to draw the balance-sheet of 10 years activity and probes prospects.

Chairman Driss Dahak said the council played its role in upgrading the political climate through consultations requiring national unanimity recalling all CCDH recommendation have been approved by King Mohammed VI. The council, he said, significantly contributed to the implementation of royal guidelines targeting entente and consensus, dispelling doubt and restoring confidence and strengthening the domestic front paving the way to unanimity on territorial integrity, human rights and other requirements for genuine democracy such as alternation in management of public affairs.

He stopped at landmark initiatives in the last ten years recalling intensive activity by the three work-groups stemming from the council which have been in charge of custody, situation in prisons and information and communication with international organizations.

As to Perspectives for the council, the chairman recalled orientations in the address by the sovereign to the council and arbitration commission on December 9, 2000 calling for new dynamics to help the CCDH cope with the 21 century challenges and revision of the Daheer setting up the council announced in the Throne day speech.

Widening the scope of attributions, renovating structure and moralizing working methods will better entitle the council to consolidate civil and political rights and grant more care to economic, social and cultural rights, Dahak said adding the council will be made up of personalities known for their impartiality, moral probity, intellectual competence and sincere adhesion to human rights.

The CCDH chairman listed a series of tasks and priorities for the council insisting on the consolidation of the rule of law saying future action will expand to new realms and cover action in favor of nationals sequestrated in Tindouf camps and those settled

Abroad, dissemination of the human right culture and the setting up of annual human right prizes.
