The politics of oil between the US, Syria and Iraq
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 12/23/2000
Analysists have said that the US ignores reports which speak of Iraq's pumping of oil to Syria, in order to avoid standing against the Arab public opinion in this very critical phase of the peace negotiations in the Middle East.
News reports said that Raad al-Qadiri, the analysist at the oil financing company which is stationed in Washington said on Friday evening that liberal explanations of the UN Security council resolutions are the only side which will permit the pumping of oil.
Al-Qadiri added that at a time when Washington is making efforts to control the operation of pumping the Iraqi oil, yet it sees that there are practical reasons to permit Syria to proceed forward in this regard. He added that there is an evidence that Iraq pumps its oil to Syria despite the American " dislike, but the US has not criticized Syria over breaking the sanctions or the punishing measures imposed on Iraq.
Ak-Qadiri explained that the Iraqi crude oil was pumped to Syria and was stored at the Syrian oil refineries. A situation which permits Syria to sell the oil which is refined in its refineries.
Al-Qadiri added that it is not easy for the US at any rate to control pumping of the Iraqi oil to the neighboring states for logistic and political reasons.
Meantime, the teacher of peace and development at Maryland university Shibli Telhami said that the quietness of the US towards the process of pumping the oil to Syria goes back that this will be a " breathing " for the Arab anger over the American policy towards the Middle east.
He added that the impact of the Intifada on the attitude towards the US policy is that this Intifada has raised the level of hatred to the US in the region and minimized the available options for the US foreign policy.
