Syrian source statement on differences between Lahoud and al-Hariri
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 12/23/2000

A Syrian official source has commented on what has been rumored on the existence of disputes between the Lebanese President Emil Lahoud and his prime minister Rafik al- Hariri.

The source said in a statement to the London- based al-Sharq al-Awsat issued today that regardless to any particular individual, the head of the government is the prime minister and isresponsible for establishments affiliating to the Cabinet while the President of the Republic is the President of all Lebanon, besides he is its national symbol and it is natural that all matters in all should be decided by him.

Replying to a question on that there is an inclination that President Lahoud will be in charge of the political file while President al-Hariri will be given the economic file, the Syrian source explained that President Lahoud since he assumed the Presidency has proven that he is a man who is committed to the principles and he always places himself beyond internal differences and therefore" confining the political file in him alone is a guarantee for Lebanon."

The Syrian source added that it has become very clear for all Lebanese that if they are wishing or wanting any thing from Syria this will be through the President of the Republic, adding that Syria's response to any Lebanese desire will be always limited to what President Lahoud adopts.
