Iraq-UK, Politics, 12/22/2000

The chairman of the Iraqi national council Sadoun Hammadi has called on members of the British House of commons to work seriously for ending the sufferings of the Iraqi people and end the sanctions imposed on them.

In a message he sent on Thursday to the British House of Commons, Hammadi stressed that the international community has become at the meantime of the belief that the economic sanctions on Iraq is in contradiction with to the UN charters and the International law because it causes the killing of innocent children and civilians.

He added that the International Parliamentary conference which was held recently in Jakarta released a decision with a majority of 834 out of a total of 1238 votes calling for lifting the UN sanctions on Iraq including the siege.

Hammadi added in his message that the siege resulted in depriving Iraq from the development of several sectors of services and humanitarian nature including the sector of oil, besides the suspension of economic relations between Iraq and Britain. A matter which resulted, in light of the position taken by the British government at the UN security council, in damaging Britain's economic interests.
