UN General Assembly votes for Syrian sovereignty over the Golan

In its 87th general session held on Wednesday evening, the UN General Assembly approved a decision which once again stresses Syria's durable sovereignty over the natural resources in the occupied Golan and also the sovereignty of the Palestinian people for their natural resources in the occupied Palestinian territories, including Jerusalem.

The decision which was adopted by the UN General Assembly with a majority of 147 against the objection of the US and Israel stresses the principle of not acquiring lands of others by means of force as well as UN security council resolutions concerned especially UN resolution 497 for 1981 which states the illegitimacy of Israel's annexation of the occupied Syrian Golan heights and considered Israel's decision to annex the Golan as null and void.

The decision also reiterates the need of immediate resumption of peace negotiations in the Middle East, according to the UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 338, the land for peace formula and reaching a settlement on all peace tracks.

The decision also stressed that the fourth Geneva agreements' provisions concerning protection of civilians at times of war are applicable on the territories occupied by Israel since 1967.

The decision expressed the concern of the international community over Israel's exploitation of the natural resources in the occupied Arab lands since 1967. It once again stressed that inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and for the Syrian citizens of the Golan in their natural resources, including the lands and the waters. The decision also noted the recognition of the international community of the economic and social negative impact of the Israeli settlements on the natural resources in the occupied Arab lands.
