Iraq-Palestine, Economics, 12/21/2000

Iraq on Tuesday called on the Palestinian government to send a delegation to Baghdad to discuss on the requirements of the Iraqi people so as to include these needs within the 9th phase of the oil-for-food agreement.

In a message sent to the chairman of the PLO political department Farouk al-Qaddoumi, the Iraqi foreign minister Muhammad Saeed al-Sahaf said that the Iraqi sides are drawing the purchasing and distribution plan for the 9th phase of the oil-for-food agreement in line with implementing the decision of the political leadership and to start taking measures and steps to implement that decision and to include the needs of the Palestinian people of food and medicine as well as other basic needs in this 9th phase.

Al-Sahaf added he will send messages to the secretary general of the UN and to the president of the UN Security Council, according to the content of this message.

On November 27th, Iraq had officially asked the UN to approve part of its revenues resulting from selling oil in the frame of the oil-for-food agreement to ensure the needs of the Palestinian people.
