A practical application of Far Eastern Medicine in Damascus Food is a two edged sword: It afflicts and its cures
Syria, Health, 12/20/2000

Syrian nutrition expert Raed A.Tolaymat said that he had lived in the United State, studied and practiced civil engineering for 18 years, then found himself accidentally and enthusiastically studying philosophy of Oriental Medicine thoroughly. He then returned to his homeland to put into practice his wide studies to restructure the human body using only foods and no medicines.

Because his love of life, his adventurous spirit, he began his journey of treating the ill with cancer then onto other so- called untreatable illnesses.

Then he treated foster and handicapped children a priority.

Replying to a question on what are the reasons that cause weakness in the various human organs, tissues and make them susceptible to disease? He told Arabic News that unhealthful eating habits and wrong use of the body as well as bad environmental conditions that we are subjected to through many years eventually cause deterioration in our body tissues. Only then can these tissues become hospitable medium for the ever present microbes. These microbes continuously enter our bodied through food, drink and air but they multiply only where there are weak organs. In order to be cured, one has to only repair these weak organs and the illness departs Diet Modification Replying to a question on what is the basic principle for Far eastern medicine, he said that it mainly relies on body organ tissue repair through healthful diet, physical activity and avoidance of negative thinking. The following illnesses / disorders have been cured suing this method Malabsorption Asthma, Diabetes, High blood pressure- High cholesterol and tri- glecerides chronic Constipation, Stomach bad bowel ulcers Obesity- Tonsillitis- Acre, Cancer Multiple Methods. He added that we know that Far Eastern medicine has several methods.

The answer was that Far eastern medicine has several methods:" Acupuncture Energy dissipation / message; and Herbal medicines." These methods have some side effects. Acupuncture; for example, is known to cure some illnesses, but nobody has been able to explain why.

On the other hand, wrong use of Many herbs can be harmful.

The fourth method is " Diet" which is the broadest and most effective and has no side effects.

On a question on if there is a specific diet for every disease and to what extent does diet relate to the patients physiological and psychological conditions, he explained that each disease requires a specific diet suitable for the patients physiological as well as psychological nature. This nature is defined during a long meeting where the person's medical history is defined and an appropriate diet is arrived at.

Physiological and psychological Medicines Replying to a question whether it is true that it has been said that there is a deep relations between physiology and psychology and that most diseases have a psychological origin, Tolaymat said there is a common conception that psychological disorders lead to physiological disorders. " I think that the opposite is true. This means that diseased organs can manifest themselves in psychological disorders."

For example a diabetic person often suffer from kidney disease. He might consequently manifest symptoms of low self- confidence, distrust of others, constant worry.

On the vegetables that are considered the basis of any diet, he said " We have to begin with the basics. Namely, avoid refined and heavily processed foods such as fast foods that are rich in saturated fats and cholesterol ( pizza, hamburger, rich pastries and sweets ). These fast foods could in the long term make a person susceptible to cancer, arthritis and cardio- vascular disease. We have to return to a more traditional way of living and eating.

In reality, traditional Middle Eastern cuisine is healthful. It relies on fresh vegetables, grains and legumes that are all rich in vitamins and minerals. It forms a healthful diet.

We regularly recommend cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli. These are good vegetables that assist the body in getting rid of accumulated saturated fats and they are known to prevent cancer. We also recommend to completely avoid canned and preserved foods and the moderate consumption of unprocessed oils. One hour of walking daily and the avoidance of beef and dairy products as much as possible.

About his experience in treating handicapped children, nutrition expert Raed Tolaymat said " since my return to Syria I have had the desire to help others and relieve their pains. The attention that I have given to foster and handicapped children is a part of my plan, I have visited the center, for deaf- dum child care. About a month ago I began at the age of 6 months from hepatic fever complications in addition to suffering chronically from the cold. He began to display moderate gradual improvements that were noticeable by his parents and teachers. he began to say a few words and his alertness increased. He is now improving slowly. You can not imagine my delight at seeing this child recover some of his lost hearing and speech. " I have visited the Damascus " Zaid Bin Haretha " foster home where I have identified some cases and began giving advice to a child named " Saeed" who is suffering from three illnesses: epilepsy, mal-absorption and deafness case.

"Ayman" was my gate that lead me to the world of the handicapped and foster children. I hope to widen this circle to include more handicapped children that require attention and care."
