Algeria: 200 persons killed in Ramadan
Algeria, Local, 12/20/2000

Algerian extremists have escalated their fighting to new higher levels of violence by the beginning of this week by killing, 40 persons, including school students, using machine-guns in an attack against a boarding school.

After three separate attacks, number of killings tolled 200 including extremists, security men and civilians since the beginning of Ramadan, three weeks ago.

The Algerian daily al-Watan said that a group of " terrorists" opened their gun- machine fires on a coach carrying civilians and this attack resulted in killing 15 and wounding others at a false barrier on Sunday near Tanis city, 200 Km to the west of the capital Algiers.

In another attack just one hour from the first one, five civilians were killed, including three women by the bullets of the extremists in Khamis Melyana city, 120 Km to the west of the Capital Algiers.

These attacks came after a massacre targeted the lives of 15 students in their sleep in a school at al-Medya town, 90Km to the south of Algiers on Saturday evening.

Political sources said that the school has been the target of the extremists because they were keen to attract the attention of the media by such attacks.

The Algerian official news agency has published a report on the raid on al-Medya and thereby ending an embargo on publishing news relating to security in the state- run media in the country.

Since 1992, some 100,000 persons were killed in acts of violence carried out by Islamists extremists since the Algerian authorities abrogated general elections they were about to win.
