Press union flatly turns down draft press code
Morocco, Politics, 12/19/2000
The Moroccan national press union (SNPM) flatly rejected the draft press code examined last week in the last government council saying "it was not consulted."
The document does not meet expectations of public opinion and professionals' needs, said SNPM whose national bureau met December 16 to look into the proposed legislation.
The union said the text maintains government powers to seize, confiscate and ban publications instead of leaving the task to justice insisting it should be amended to provide for more freedom and promotion of profession.
The SNPM release saw the text as flawed because it sticks to sanctions such as jail and increased fines, provides for more bans and does not take into account most of concerns raised by the union.
