Khartoum hopes to have more understanding from the Bush administration
Sudan-USA, Politics, 12/19/2000

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has congratulated the US President elect George W. Bush. A Sudanese governmental source said that Khartoum hopes to have the rule of the new US President George Bush a further understanding for pending issues in the relations between the two countries, stressing " the readiness of the Sudanese government to deal seriously and to maintain a dialogue with the new US administration so as to explain and clarify the points of differences in the relations between the two countries.

However, relations between Khartoum and Washington has been witnessing continuous stumbling after Sudan had expelled the political official at the US embassy over his meeting with the leaders of the " Democratic National alliance " representing the Sudanese opposition inside the country and accused it of conspiring to topple the regime.

It was stated that the US government had refused Sudan's nomination of Ms. Aqnas Lukudo as a Sudanese ambassador in Washington but without mentioning certain reasons for the refusal. But observers say that the US has refused Lukudo's nomination on the belief that Sudan had nominated her because she is a woman and because she is from the South of Sudan, by which Sudan intends to make a propaganda for itself. Besides this woman is not close to the decision making centers in Khartoum.
