Iraq signs the first deal in the framework of the 9th phase
Iraq, Economics, 12/18/2000

Baghdad on Saturday signed the first oil deal in the framework of the 9th phase of the " oil for food" program.

The official daily al-Thawra issued on Saturday said that " most probably the advocates of settlement pin hopes on the US President and wish to show his determination and persistence to bring in the magic solution."

The paper questioned " does Bush ( the son of Bush) have what his father George Bush and his predecessor Bill Clinton had."

The paper concluded as saying that "the strategy of al-Jihad is the only right, practical and practical way to liberate Palestine." On the other hand, a source at the UN said on Saturday that Iraq has submitted on Friday the first contract to sell oil in the 9th phase of the oil for food program in order to get the consent of the UN.

However, the contracts with companies trying to but the Iraqi oil exports need the consent of the UN in the framework of the oil-for-food agreement which permits Iraq to sell oil to buy foodstuffs, medicines and humanitarian aids so as to alleviate the consequences of the comprehensive sanctions imposed on the country since the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990.

This 9th phase of the oil for food program which lasts for 6 months was approved by the UN on December 5th.
