Elections in Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 12/16/2000

Friday was the third day in the elections in Sudan for the Presidency and the national council, amid an increasing turnout from citizens on the voting ballots in the centers which are deployed in 23 Sudanese provinces out of 26.

The chairman of the higher committee for the elections in al-Khartoum province said that number of those who cast their votes until Friday morning was 50,000 most of them in the rural areas of al-Khartoum. He said that that state's employees might be given a one day leave in order to be able to cast their votes as happened in the elections of 1996.

Worthy mentioning that these elections are not held in three Sudanese provinces in the South because they are within the fighting areas with the rebellion movement. The President of the Republic appoints their representatives at the next national assembly ( parliament).
