Al-Assad receives the EIB delegation
Syria-European Union, Economics, 12/15/2000

President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday in Damascus received at al-Shaab palace the deputy president of the European Investment Bank EIB Francis Mayor. Mayor was accompanied by the EU chief of mission Marc Piereni, the French Ambassador in Damascus and other EU officials concerned.

Talk dealt with the discussions the EU delegation held in Damascus and the joint desire to expand the prospects of cooperation between Syria and the European Union including projects to be established in the interests of the two sides.

Earlier in the day, the Syrian prime minister met Mayor and member of the accompanying delegation.

Means of developing co-operation relations between Syria and the EIB in the areas of energy, the electricity, oil and gas, and also other water, the environment and telecommunications projects for the interests of the Syrian and European sides.

Meantime the Syrian minister of state for planning Issam al-Zaem and Mayor signed a financing agreement of the power transfer project at a cost of 75 million EURO. The signing ceremony was attended by the minister of electricity Munib Saem al-Daher.

The project includes the delivery of materials and equipment necessary to install 8 electricity station of 230/ 66 KV and also the delivery of 230 KV cables for several Syrian provinces. This project will be fully completed in the mid of the year 2005.
