Boycott of Israeli goods copes with Egypt's principles
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 12/14/2000
"President Hosni Mubarak's assertion that every Egyptian had the right to boycott Israeli products fully conforms to the ethics Egypt has always called for," Minister of Information Safwat El Sherif said.
Israel has maintained its atrocious aggression against innocent Palestinians and uses in its attacks all types of arms, warplanes, tanks and artillery, to kill Palestinians," El-Sherif told BBC Wednesday.
He described as rational and clear the President's remarks to boycott Israeli goods in particular and the idea of boycott in general.
"Regarding foreign goods, among them the American, which was brought up at the recent meeting of the National Democratic Party Parliamentary Body, the president said that there was a global and economic system that governed today's world, and that no country could live alone because it is part of this system," Sherif added.
He referred to the free trade agreements and trade agreements that regulate trade exchange between Egypt and the rest of the world.
"Mubarak spoke of the interests and sometimes supreme interests at stake, because the world of today is a useful interchange of interests and advantages," Sherif told BBC.
"Unleashing a total boycott will be tantamount to a punishment of the Egyptian people, the Egyptian family and the Arab family," he added.
But every Arab country in the region has the right to decide for itself on this issue, he said, adding that some Arab countries were totally dependent on the outside world when it concerns food and clothing.
"Egypt, however, is self-sufficient in many of the citizens' daily needs," Sherif said.
"The emergency Arab summit that was held in Cairo in October did not issue any decision on economic boycott," he concluded.
