No radioactivity in Moroccan sea, Morocco says
Morocco-UK, Environment, 12/14/2000
Morocco on Wednesday denied the existence of any radioactivity in its sea linked to the British sub-marine Tireless, currently stranded in the neighboring Gibraltar waters.
Moroccan environment minister, Mohamed Yazghi, told the house of representatives that the government has taken all necessary measures to prevent any possible radioactivity.
The government also contacted the British competent authorities to get information on the submarine's problem, he said.
Morocco also contacted the International Atomic Energy AGENCY (IAEA) in Vienna, which affirmed that it received no notification of nuclear incident linked to the British sub-marine, Yazghi said.
Britain is signatory of the 1986 Vienna Convention committing member countries to immediately inform IAEA of any nuclear incident or accident.
