Possible complications for Lebanese detainees in Syria
Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 12/13/2000

The Monte Carlo radio correspondent in Beirut said on Tuesday that several Lebanese detainees and prisoners will stay in the Syrian jails and will not be released unless they complete their imprisonment sentence, concerning crimes they committed on the Syrian territories.

It was learnt that crimes attributed to the Lebanese detainees relate to spying for Israel, carrying out acts of destruction against the Syrian forces in Lebanon. Those Lebanese prisoners who were released on Monday were taken to the Lebanese defense ministry to be interrogated in regard to the crimes they had committed.

The correspondent added that the Lebanese authorities will shortly receive a list including the names of detainees who were not released yet.

However, the Lebanese security judicial committee was met on Tuesday in order to evaluate results of its works and to discuss files its has already has as well as to declare closing of the file of the Lebanese detainees in the Syrian jails.

Meantime, in its Tuesday's issue, the Lebanese daily al-Nahar said that there is a possibility that another shift of Lebanese detainees in Syrian jails will be released next to the first shift which was released on Tuesday.

The paper added that it is not known yet the number of the second shift, noting that Tuesday's shift of the released Lebanese included 54 prisoners.
