Israel's spy to stand trial in January
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 12/12/2000

Defendant Sherif Filali, accused of being a Mossad Agent and spying for Israel, will stand trial before the Higher State Security Emergency Court on January 13.

Counsellor Hussein Hashad, Head of the Technical and follow-up office of Cairo Court of Appeal Monday said that the trial procedures will be held at the premises of North Cairo Court in Abbasiya.

Egyptian Intelligence on September 27 informed the State Security Prosecution that Filali, while in Spain, had been enlisted by a Russian agent to work for the Israeli Mossad and that two Israeli intelligence officers had trained the spy to do intelligence work.

Filali was instructed to photograph several military sites in Egypt and obtain information on development of Egyptian weaponry in addition to supplying information on Toshka's agricultural project.

Investigations also revealed that Filali had received sums of money from the Israeli Mossad for the reports he submitted on September 27.

Searching Filali's apartment in Heliopolis suburb revealed a number of computers storing political, military and economic information in addition to special equipment used in contacting Mossad agents.

Filali confessed that while he was in a foreign country for post-graduate studies, he befriended a German Jewish woman who introduced him to a major company official in charge of Middle East operations who invited him to learn Hebrew ahead of entrusting him with missions for the State of Israel.

When Filali went later to Spain, he met with the Russian who told him he was an arms dealer, before revealing his connection with Mossad and asked him for information on Egypt.

Filali also confessed that he had been to several European countries where he met with Mossad officers to receive further instructions and money for his deliveries.
