Damascus meeting condemns Israel practices against the Palestinians

The Arab follow up committee stemmed from the recent meeting of the extraordinary summit held in Egypt has conclude its deliberation in Damascus on Monday by voicing full support for the Palestinian Intifada against support and pledged full backing for both Syria and Lebanon against the Israeli threats.

Egypt's foreign minister Amr Moussa said about a statement issued by the foreign ministers of Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia and Bahrain as well as the Palestinian government that the meeting strongly condemns Israel's continued aggressions against the Palestinian people.

The statement says that " the ministers express their full support to the Palestinian people in their struggle to restore all their legitimate rights including their right for the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as a capital." Moussa added while reading the statement that Israel's threats against Syria and Lebanon were discussed by the participants in the meeting and were considered as a threat to international peace and security.

He continued that " the committee emphasized the grave aspects of the Israeli threats and their effect on international peace and security.

It considers these threats as a threat against the whole Arab nation.

The statement also said that the committee members confirmed the necessity of establishing of a nuclear- free zone in the Middle east, due to the dangers of israeli nuclear weapons on international peace and security. The members of the committee made it clear that Israel's possession of mass destruction weapons greatly threatens Arab national security and stability.

Moreover among other issues adopted by members of the committee were resolutions and recommendations aimed to reactivate the joint Arab action with a view to explaining the current grave situation resulted from Israel's threats against Syria and Lebanon.

They also aimed at studying how to reactivate the role of the Arab boycott of Israel, to call for an emergency meeting by the Arab offices of boycotting Israel due in Damascus and to lift the blockade imposed on the Palestinians.

Concerning the current political moves, the follow up committee underlines the importance of briefing the international fact- finding commission on what actually going on in the Israeli occupied Palestinian Territories and on the real cause that have led to the tragic events.

Members of the committee also advised to follow up implementation of the Cairo Arab Summit resolution concerning putting Israeli war criminals to trial. It also recommended the Arab parliamentary Union to urge the European Parliament to adopt a decisive stand against Israel's gross violation of human rights in the Palestinian territories.

In a statement after he had read the statement, Moussa stressed the importance of the meetings of the committee on joint Arab action.

He said that these meetings are a serious step in the course of reconstructing of the Arab order which started when the decision to hold an annual Arab summit was taken.

Meantime, the Secretary general of the Arab league (AL) Ismat Abdul Miguid said the committee's next meeting would be held in Tunisia next month, January, 2001.

A meeting will be held in Amman in February would prepare for the firs of a series of annual Arab summits that was approved at the recent Cairo Arab summit.

The AL chief continued that " This is the first time in the AL ­ 55 year old history that Arabs agree to hold annual summits. This move would play a great role in the achievement of Arab solidarity and the joint Arab action."
