Iran, Iraq for normalizing relations
Iraq-Iran, Politics, 12/11/2000
The Kuwaiti daily al-Watan issued on Sunday in Kuwait quoted Iranian sources as expecting that talks carried out by the Iraqi diplomatic delegation, currently visiting Tehran, will conclude results that would accelerate the normalization of relations between the two countries, ending the differences and reaching a final peace agreement.
The sources added that the question of the opposition in the two countries occupied the forefront of bilateral discussions, noting other files which occupy the second grade of importance, especially border re-demarcation, cleansing the borders from landmines, commercial exchange and the question of religious visits, especially the holy Shiite shrines in Iraq.
The paper remarked that the meeting between the Iranian President Muhammad Khatami and the Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan which was held on the sideline of OPEC Summit in Caracas two months before had laid the new foundation stone for the development of bilateral relations between the two countries.
In this regard, the same Iranian sources stressed that Iran has announced its readiness to close a TV station for the opposition in the name of " Mujahidi Khalq" as a practical step on the seriousness of the two countries to close the file of the opposition and develop needed normalization steps.
