Egypt presses for boosting development, human rights
Egypt, Culture, 12/9/2000
The UN commission in charge of humanitarian, social and human rights wound up its work with adopting over 70 resolutions covering the areas of its concern.
Egypt's UN Ambassador Ahmad Abul-Gheit said the Egyptian delegation to the UN was active in the debates and adoptions of the resolutions that dealt with the questions of human rights, social development, women's empowerment, refugee protection, the right of self-determination, crime-prevention, drug-control, children's rights and the abolition of racism and racial discrimination.
"The Palestinian people's right to self-determination, endorsed with a sweeping majority by the UN General Assembly for the first time in its history, is one of the adopted resolutions that voice hope for a quick resumption of Mideast peace negotiations," Abul-Gheit said.
"The Egyptian delegation sponsored another draft resolution on maximizing developing nations' benefit from the positive aspects of globalization, with a view to enabling their peoples to enjoy the full range of human rights," Abul-Gheit said.
On the resolution dealing with refugees, Abul-Gheit believed that the refugee problem in Africa and the Middle East should remain among the UN's top priorities.
Arab delegations, led by Egypt, insisted that all resolutions adopted should include clear references to the refugees' right to voluntary return, he said, adding that the Arab group also pressed for Israel's commitment to full implementation of the 1949 UN General Assembly's Resolution 194 on the right of Palestinian refugees to return.
"Egypt takes great interest in the preparations for the General Assembly's special session on children slated for 2001," Abul-Gheit said.
