Royal jordanian operates second flight to Iraq in a week
Jordan-Iraq, Economics, 12/8/2000

A plane of Jordanian national carrier, Royal Jordanian (RJ), flew to Baghdad on Thursday on the second two-way flight to the Iraqi capital within a week following stoppage of regular Iraqi-Jordanian air flights some 10 years ago.

Nader al-al-zahabi, the general director and executive manager of the RJ, denied in a statement to Kuwaiti news agency KUNA speculations that the flight had been cancelled and asserted that the aircraft took off from Amman airport. Some news agencies had reported that the flight had been cancelled for lack of approval by the U.N. sanctions committee, in charge of supervising international sanctions including a ban on commercial flights, imposed since the 2nd Gulf war in 1990.

Although the previous RJ flight to Baghdad carried passengers and was of commercial nature, the Jordanian official maintained that it was a humanitarian flight. He added that the RJ would stage weekly flights to Baghdad with consent of the sanctions committee, which receives the permit for the flight 48 hours ahead of take-off, with information about the passengers and the materials on board. The previous commercial flight to Baghdad was the first of its kind since the international community imposed sanctions on Iraq. Jordanian prime minister and other officials went also flew to Baghdad earlier this year.
