Lebanese ministerial delegation heads to Iraq
Lebanon-Iraq, Politics, 12/8/2000
A Lebanese ministerial delegation left for Iraq Thursday for talks on economic and oil cooperation, in the first high-ranking visit, reports Kuwaiti news agency KUNA.
Prime minister Rafik Hariri told the press "the oil negotiations of the ministerial-economic delegation in Iraq will be within the U.N. Oil-for-food program." This program "is about the possibility of pumping Iraqi oil to Lebanon in return of some commodities from Lebanon to Iraq," he said.
KUNA reports quoting Hariri's press secretary the delegation's visit was coordinated with the United Nations. If both countries agreed on a bilateral oil-for-food deal, she said, "there shall be other visits to Iraq to activate the trade exchange, specially that Lebanon needs a market to sell its national products."
The delegation groups minister of state Beshara Marhaj, finance minister Fuad Al-Sanyoura, minister of state Michel Faroun, economy minister Bassel Fleihan and Iraq's ambassador.
The talks will focus economic, financial, commercial and industrial issues of common concern.
