Morocco has made considerable strides in human rights
Morocco, Culture, 12/8/2000
Secretary general of Amnesty International's office in Morocco, Mohamed Sektaoui, said Morocco has made considerable strides and tangible development in human rights.
In a statement to MAP on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the universal declaration of human rights, he cited the introduction of human rights courses in schools and efforts to increase human rights awareness among some categories of civil servants, adding, however, much remains to be done to adapt national laws to international human rights conventions.
He went on that Morocco possesses huge potentials to construct a rule of law and promote human rights.
AI counts on Morocco's contribution to succeed in an anti-torture campaign to be staged on the occasion of the declaration 25th anniversary.
For Sektaoui, the human rights situation remains deplorable in several countries. It is not enough to sign human rights conventions and declarations, it is time to pressure governments to make them respect their commitments and end poverty, torture, arbitrary justice and disappearances.
